BENEFITS OF LEARNING ABROAD
Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience for students. From enhancing their global network to experiencing a new culture, the benefits to education and their resulting career are significant.
SEE THE WORLD
By studying abroad, students experience a brand-new country with incredible new outlooks, customs and activities. The benefits of studying abroad include the opportunity to see new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of your host nation.
Immersing yourself in the education system of your host country is a great way to really experience and understand the people, its traditions, and its culture.
TAKE IN A NEW CULTURE
When studying abroad students are exposed to incredible new foods, customs, traditions, and social atmospheres. Students will find that they have a better understanding and appreciation for the nation’s people and history. Our students learn about each other’s cultures, working together in the classroom and beyond to solve problems, create solutions, explore ideas and expand their horizons.
We have woven language development into our curriculum. In addition to the formal education in English, all non-Mandarin speaking students study Mandarin, while our Chinese students study to improve their English speaking skills. In addition to the formal education on English, students receive considerable language practice through day to day life within their adopted community. Studying abroad grants students the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in a new language, and there is no better way to learn than to dive right in.
When students complete their study abroad program and return home, they return with a new perspective on culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn. Needless to say, all of these are very attractive to future employers and/or prospective universities. Some students even find that they love their host country so much that they decide to seek to further their education there; a local education will be very valuable when ultimately searching for a potential job in that country.
FIND NEW INTERESTS
Studying in a different country offers many new activities and interests that students may never have discovered if they’d stayed at home. They may find that they have an as-yet-undiscovered talent for hiking, water sports, snow skiing, golf, or various other new sports they may never have tried/been exposed to back home. They’ll also have the chance to discover other new and exciting forms of entertainment. Plays, movies, dancing, events, and concerts are just a few activities that further expose your child to North American life and culture.
While studying abroad, Children attend school and live with students. This gives them the opportunity to really get to know and create lasting relationships with students with different backgrounds from their own. In addition to rewarding personal relationships, these friends can also be important networking tools later down the road.
There is nothing quite like being in a foreign country; the experience brings out a child’s independent nature. Students who study abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbour. A benefit of studying abroad is the opportunity for students to discover themselves while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place can be overwhelming at times, and it tests their ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to problem-solve.
Like future employers, University admissions boards look very highly on study abroad experiences. Students that study abroad demonstrate diversity and show that they aren’t afraid to seek out new challenges or put themselves in difficult situations. Most importantly, students who have studied abroad show just how committed they are to their education. Universities regularly look for candidates who will bring a unique aspect to their school. Students who have studied abroad have shown that they have the curiosity and educational acumen to be a leader.
